Is an EV really cheaper to run?

For most drivers in India, yes — especially if most charging happens at home. This calculator uses your own numbers so you can see the real difference instead of a brochure figure.

How to use it

  1. Enter the total km you drove (or plan to drive).
  2. Enter how much of that was on a home charger (in km or %) and what it cost; the rest is treated as public charging.
  3. Enter the petrol/diesel car's mileage and the fuel price.
  4. Press Compare Cost to see totals, cost per km and the difference.

The formulas

EV cost / km = (Home cost + Public cost) ÷ Total km

Fuel cost = (Total km ÷ Mileage) × Fuel price

This compares energy and fuel cost only. Tariffs, fuel prices and real-world efficiency vary by city, car and driving style.

Frequently asked questions

How is the EV cost per km calculated?

Add what you paid for home charging and public/fast charging over the distance, then divide by the total km driven. Example: ₹5,000 + ₹10,000 for 7,000 km = ₹2.14 per km.

How is the petrol or diesel cost worked out?

Litres used = km ÷ mileage (km/l). Fuel cost = litres × price per litre. For 7,000 km at 18 km/l and ₹105/l that is about 389 litres, or roughly ₹40,800 (₹5.83 per km).

Why split home and public charging?

Home charging is usually a fraction of the price of DC fast charging, so the mix changes your real cost a lot. Enter the split in km or as a percentage.

Does this include maintenance, insurance or purchase price?

No — it compares energy/fuel running cost only. EVs usually also cost less to service, but the purchase price and battery warranty should be part of a full buying decision.
